Using Modular Pieces to Create Environments

The idea is to get as much detail with the least amount of time and work. Designing modular model pieces is similar to making a more detailed texture. It's still tiled, but a model. With modular pieces, your building can change size very easily, and can be used to make more buildings. For example, it's possible to make a few window types, building fronts and trims to make an entire city scene.

Build a window, give it some trim and a divider. Putting these together in a short row, then lining up in a long row for the whole building. I built a larger divider and top/bottom trims to bring it all together. This gives the entire building face a solid look, with strong depth. It's also easy to build, since it's just a row a boxes with no backfaces.

Same idea, I built a window, dividers, trim, and stacked them. Next I set them up with some major building supports, and shaped it to make a whole building. While it's still a box, it's covered in detail.

Most all games are done in some manner of this today, for great examples look at Ut2k4, Ratchet & Clank, Jak and Daxter.
